Winter 2008
STAFF HIGHLIGHTS
We are delighted to welcome three new staff members as part of our commitment to bring in a younger generation of therapists to carry on Shiluv’s vision. Each of them brings added skill to Shiluv and their contribution has been felt already, in both their work and their participation in case consultations.
Tzafrir Cooperman is a clinical psychologist with certification as a specialist in his field. He worked for many years in the Counseling Services of the Israel Defense Forces and trained in family therapy at Shiluv.
Meirav Tal is a staff social worker at Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot. where she works with trauma cases admitted to the emergency room. In addition she has chaired the committee for the prevention of family violence and helped to develop a treatment protocol for the medical staff for when violence has occurred.
Yehudit Asulin is a clinical criminologist and department coordinator for the closed psychiatric ward at the Magen Prison in Ramle. Her area of expertise is evaluating the dangerousness of inmates. She also runs groups for sex offenders.
MINI-WORKSHOPS
Invitations have sent to both the professional and medical communities to the following four short workshops that Shiluv is offering: (1) Principles and Practice from a Family Perspective, Treatment of Trauma; (2) Treatment of Incest Cases; (3) Short-Term Therapy; and (4) Divorce Mediation. We hope those invited will be interested in participating.
SHILUV AND BEZALEL ACADEMY OF ART
Shiluv has begun to explore the possibility of a cooperative effort with the department of architecture at Jerusalem's renowned Bezalel Academy of Art. In the coming academic year students will be learning about the impact of architectural design on human emotions and vice versa. Our goal is to give the students additional perspective on how to build physical surroundings that will promote better mental health and family relations. This will be accomplished through dialogues with Shiluv therapists.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Shiluv is proud to announce that Aviva Goldberg will be joining our Board of Directors. Aviva is the director of the Department for the Aged in the Welfare branch of Community Services in the Jerusalem Municipality. Prior to her current appointment, she directed the southern and western welfare bureaus—a total of 12 services. With her administrative and clinical skills, she will be an invaluable addition to the Board. We welcome her with open arms.
CHILD PROTECTION WORKERS AND FAMILY COURT REFERRALS
Over the past year, Shiluv has seen an increase in the number of referrals from child protection workers and the family courts. Often these referrals are families where the divorced parents are waging war on the backs of their children. In some cases, the non-custodial parent is asking to be more involved in the life of the child and the custodial parent is using visitation as a weapon. The professionals who made these referrals have been pleased with the work done by Shiluv. They view our services as a framework that can hold and treat these difficult cases. We are currently working on a treatment paradigm for these families.
"FATHER KNOWS BEST!"
(OR SO ROBERT YOUNG USED TO SAY)
Shiluv’s fourth annual conference in memory of Arnold Segal on the topic of father was held in February. Shiluv conducted a small survey of new participants regarding the quality of the program and their interest in attending future conferences. The general response of those interviewed was very enthusiastic and we are already planning for the coming year.
IN MEMORIAM
Shiluv mourns the loss of Miriam Schocken, who passed away on February 6th. Miriam was the executive director of the Schocken Family Foundation and over the years encouraged and supported Shiluv's work. May her memory be blessed.
