Summer 2007

STAFF HIGHLIGHTS

We are delighted to welcome Esther Koenigsberg-Ben Gigi to our staff. Esther holds an M.S. and a post-Master's degree from Queens College, N.Y. A graduate of the "Dialogue" program of the Psychoanalytic Institute, she is a certified family therapist and individual psychotherapist specializing in parent counseling and has worked for close to 20 years with youth at risk. In addition to treating families at Shiluv, Esther has joined the staff of our Training Center.

Moshe Erlendur Okon, coordinator of our Divorce Mediation Unit, is also the author of a number of children's books. Moshe has expanded his literary skills and recently completed the translation from English to Hebrew of Dr. Don-David Lusterman's excellent book, Infidelity: A Survival Guide. The book will be published by The Equator Mediation and Training, Jerusalem. Congratulations, Moshe.

DON-DAVID LUSTERMAN

Dr. Don-David Lusterman is the founding executive director of the American Board of Family Psychology, and has an independent practice in Baldwin, N.Y. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association as well as of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, he established the program in Family Therapy at Hofstra University and helped found the American Family Therapy Academy. He has authored and edited several books, including the monumental Integrating Family Therapy, Handbook of Family Psychology and Systems Theory. Shiluv knows Don-David as a gifted clinician, musician, and cinema buff. Every summer we look forward to the Jerusalem Film Festival, knowing that Don-David and his wife, Judith, camp out at Cinemateque. Most importantly for us, during his visit Don-David comes to our weekly staff meeting, where he selflessly contributes his time and wisdom in consulting about cases. THANK YOU from all of us!

WE'RE GROWING

For the past several months, we have been deliberating together with the Board of Directors about expanding Shiluv’s services. With a growing waiting list of families and couples and our desire to make treatment available as soon as possible, we decided to increase the staff. This left us with another difficulty: Our treatment rooms were occupied almost to capacity in the afternoon and evening hours. We needed more room. Luckily, the small office next to ours became available, and with hard work and determination, renovations connecting the space to our existing offices should be completed by the end of August. Our students will be in seventh heaven, as the Training Center will operate in the "annex" and in a much larger room.

The quest for additional therapists poses an even greater challenge. We are interested in bringing on people who will not only assume therapy responsiblities, but also become involved in research and writing. It is with great excitement that we venture forward and thank all our dear donors for making this possible.

"MOTHER" MAKES A HIT

Our Third Annual Conference was a huge success.   Nearly 300 participants attended. The presentations were intelligent and thought-provoking. We take this opportunity to thank Professors Amiah Leiblich and Rachel Elior, and Maia Dreyfuss, who contributed their time. In the introductory remarks, we shared with the participants (rather than hold them in suspense for an entire year) the topic for our Fourth Annual Conference. In the past, we examined siblings and mothers, so it is fitting that we should take a look at fathers. We are already in the midst of our program planning for February 21, 2008. You all are invited!
